Description Supposing Books Conan the Unconquered (Robert Jordan's Conan Novels #3)

If I understand correctly chronologically this book falls between Jordan's Conan 1 and 2. It is kind of a black sheep as is does not feature recurring characters from books 1, 2, and 4. It any way Conan decided to abandon his old and noble profession of thieving when his travels brought him to city of Aghrapur. He stopped at the inn to get lodgings and drink only to realize there were three of his old friends (more like acquaintances) at the same place: the innkeeper,
Innkeeper
a thief Emilio, and a astrologer Sharak. Needless to say, this was the first time they were introduced to readers despite Conan being familiar with them.

Not far from the city there was a stronghold of the Cult of Doom. While everybody consider them harmless lunatics the first chapter of the book shows their behind the scenes leader: a dark wizard specializing in nectomancy and demonology bound on world domination, just like any self-respected dark wizard did even way before Sauron made his appearance.
Sauron
He also got his butt kicked at the end - just like all his fantasy colleagues, but I am getting ahead of myself.

What everybody in the city knew the cult was fabulously stinking filthy rich. Emilio's girlfriend convinced him to "borrow" a super-duper piece of jewelry from them. He went and did not return. At this time Conan who worried about his fate asked Sharak to see what stars promise in the near future. Stars promised gloom and doom with the only chance of surviving for Conan and the whole world was if Conan recall his profession he was trying to stay away from, go directly to lion's maw I mean Cult's headquarters and attempt to rescue Emilio. Conan was not crazy about the idea except that Sharak's predictions always came true. He joined by a sergeant of city watch Akeba who wanted to bring his daughter back from the cult.
Cult
Sharak decided to tag along because he wanted to have an adventure in his life. He got it, by the way.

I like this book more than the previous one, thus the higher rating. I already mentioned recurring characters from the first two books. I was not too impressed with them in the first book and I got bored with them in the second. Here instead we got Sharak and Akeba, both more interesting than whoever was temporary (they will come back in the next installment) lost. Not only they were great, their banter was even better.

The story was not boring at any moment unlike book 2 where it dragged a little. Everything moved along with the nice pace. The bad guy felt like a real threat. Conan was... well, Conan. He got his usual share of damsel in distress to rescue - by pure count of them he left James Bond far behind. Sorry double-O 7.
James Bond

Conclusion: good old-fashioned pulpy sword and sorcery, just like your grandmother used to make. 4 stars.

Comment On Regarding Books Conan the Unconquered (Robert Jordan's Conan Novels #3)
If youre not averse to prose so purple you can name a band after it, a lot of ravishing of wenches, the casual cleaving of skulls and assorted mutterings and cursings there is much to be enjoyed about this novel. I especially loved the gangrenous monster.Im going to go out on a severed limb here and give this four stars. Noooo, its not a good novel by any definition of the word, except perhaps if rowdiness or excess forms part of the equation. However, it sure brings back memories of the heyday

Great book, classic Conan, I loved it. Some of it's so perfect you laugh out loud in pure joy. Highly recommended to Conan fans.

Probably Jordan's best Conan book. Easily improves upon Howard's original creation and a hell of a good time to read.

This frustrated me less than the last volume, but it has its own problems. The main issue is that it is just really boring. I am an insomniac and usually have to take a sleep aid in order to even consider sleeping, so when I find myself nodding off while reading a book then I know there is a problem. Also, I have always heard that Jordan didn't "get" Conan, and from reading all of his pastiches I am beginning to understand why people say that.
