Commentary As Books 空の境界 未来福音 [The Garden Of Sinners/Recalled Out Summer]
This novel is commonly referred to as "Kara No Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin" (in English: "Empty Boundaries: Gospel of the Future"), a fourth volume extending the story of Kara no Kyoukai. The English fan translation done by the editor of "Quality Mistranslations" is actually very well done; I think it is easier to read and smoother than Cokesakto's translations of the first 3 Kara no Kyoukai volumes (see my review of those), which was pretty good for a fan translation to begin with.Anyway, the novel is split into two parts: the first and biggest part is about Shiki and Mikiya meeting and dealing with two people who can see into the future. Shiki has to stop a bomber who uses his future sight ability to get away with all his bombings and execute them perfectly. Mikiya meets a girl who has future sight ability and is unsure of how to live with it; they meet when the girl is trying to stop a man from going toward a street where she "saw" that he would die in a car accident. Just like the bomber, she's kind of bored with life until she meets Mikiya (and with the bomber, until he meets Shiki), although she's basically a good person while the bomber is amoral.
The second half of the novel gives a glimpse of the former bomber's life several years after Shiki destroyed his future sight ability ((view spoiler)[he actually ends up working for Shiki and Mikiya, and his job is related to their daughter (hide spoiler)]). At the end, there's also a scene where a much younger Shiki (before she even met Mikiya) meets an old fortune teller who predicts her dark future. Readers will see that the novel doesn't go in chronological order; it shows a future event and will go backwards to show what really happened. This might be slightly confusing at first, but it's easy to get a hang of.
Anyway, the novel was good and well-written. Only, I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have because I already knew what happened from the anime version. Since the anime of Kara no Kyoukai is almost like an audio-visual carbon copy of the novels, it's much better to read the novels first to really enjoy them.
