Ilustration To Books King of Rome
In the early 20th century, a man named Charlie Hudson raised racing pigeons in Derby, England. In 1913, he entered his best bird in a race all the way from Rome. A devastating storm came through on the day of the race and all the pigeons disappeared — all but Charlie Hudson’s pigeon, which found international acclaim as the "King of Rome.” This lovely picture book follows the true story of Charlie and his amazing pigeon, and the hope they brought to his working class world. Gorgeous pencil and crayon illustrations capture both the era and the sense of flight.Present Books During King of Rome

In 1913, an Englishman by the name of Charles Hudson entered one of his pigeons in a long-distance race from Rome. Against the expectations of all the naysayers, and despite a terrible storm on the day of the race, Charlie's pigeon made it home: a return that became a symbol of hope to his working-class community. Immortalized in song a few decades later by Dave Sudbury, the tale of King of Rome has been performed by singers from June Tabor to Garnet Rogers. Here it is used as the text in
Only after reading through the book did I read the "about the author" section and discovered that the text from this was actually a song. I hope the song sounds better than the poem in my head. But the artwork is stunning and the idea behind the story is good. Not sure how much children will understand or appreciate, but the pictures alone make it worthwhile.
